The Government has advised Premier League clubs they are under ‘no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures’ this weekend following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

There remains doubt whether fixtures will take place as the country enters into a period of national mourning.

But on Friday, the Government released guidance for the public and businesses which gave an update on sporting events.

“There is no obligation to cancel or postpone events and sporting fixtures, or close entertainment venues during the National Mourning period,” the document read.

“This is at the discretion of individual organisations. As a mark of respect, organisations might wish to consider cancelling or postponing events or closing venues on the day of the State Funeral.

“If sporting fixtures or events are planned for the day of the State Funeral, organisations may want to adjust the event timings so they do not clash with the timings of the funeral service and associated processions.

“As a mark of respect, and in keeping with the tone of National Mourning, organisers may wish to hold a period of silence and/or play the National Anthem at the start of events or sporting fixtures, and players may wish to wear black armbands.”

Manchester United, who played against Real Sociedad on Thursday night less than two hours after The Queen’s death had been announced, are currently due to play Crystal Palace on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Manchester City are set to host Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday at 5:30pm.

The Government’s advice on the State Funeral may also impact fixture scheduling for both Manchester clubs.

The Red Devils play Leeds United on Sunday 18 September at 2pm, while City travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers the day prior.
