VAR has been heavily involved in the early months of the Premier League season but how might the table look without it

Manchester United and Manchester City had mixed fortunes over the weekend as the Red Devils produced a stunning comeback to defeat Brentford while Pep Guardiola’s side lost at title rivals Arsenal.

Two goals from Scott McTominay in stoppage time rescued all three points for Erik ten Hag’s men as they went into the international break on a high following a dip in form heading into their clash against the Bees. City’s loss at the Gunners was their second consecutive in the Premier League, as they sit third after eight games, just two points behind surprise league leaders Tottenham Hotspur.

Some felt VAR should have been involved in that game at the Emirates Stadium after Mateo Kovacic slid in to tackle Martin Ødegaard in the 29th minute and was cautioned for catching the Gunners midfielder on the ankle. A check by VAR deemed the yellow card sufficient. It is not the first time this season that a VAR decision has caused plenty of debate.
