Premier League table without VAR: Where Man Utd, Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool & Newcastle would sit - gallery

VAR decisions have caused lots of controversy and debate in the Premier League during the 2023/24 season

Manchester United and Manchester City fans will be eager for the return of Premier League action this weekend but another round of top-flight football inevitably means another bout of VAR debate.

The technology has been the hot topic so far this term with both the Red Devils and the Cityzens on the receiving end of some questionable calls. Just two weeks ago Pep Guardiola's side's meeting with Chelsea was plagued with VAR controversy while Erik ten Hag blasted the system after Champions League defeat to FC Copenhagen.

Fuming over Marcus Rashford's red card, Ten Hag said: “It's harsh as I think he went for the ball and the referee has such a long time. They need such a long time to make it a red card.

“I think when you freeze it, it looks always worse. And as I say, it takes them so long and they make a red card of it. I'm very disappointed about such decisions. I think the game is never meant to be like this.

“This has nothing to do with football. Decisions have to be made and I accept that there are also wrong decisions made. If I sum it up, then you make on this level three such tough decisions... you control the game, and I think the game is never meant to be for that.”

Manchester United aren't the only club to feel that VAR isn't on their side this season, with many teams aggrieved by the system at some point. ManchesterWorld looks at what the Premier League table would look like if the system hadn't existed at all this season.
