Paul Scholes has said Manchester United could finish the season as the ‘best of the rest’ behind Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s men are heavy favourites to claim the Premier League crown again this campaign, but ex-Red Devil Scholes hopes United can ultimately be the side closest to them in the table. The 47-year-old admitted he was uncertain how this season would pan out after United lost their opening games against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, but said he’s been impressed with the team’s response since then.

For this reason, Scholes is confident United will continue to improve as the season continues, while he also feels the team will get better as Erik ten Hag and his summer signings become more acclimatised to life in the English top flight

“After those first two games I was really concerned they wouldn’t finish in the top six,” the former midfielder said on BT Sport, ahead of United’s Europa League game against Omonia Nicosia. “But the way they’ve fought back - have won five out of the last six Premier League games - they’ve given themselves a great chance.

“They do look like they could be the best of the rest [after City]. I think they’ve got the squad of players which shows that they could. You have to remember, it’s still very early days for some of these players who have come from different clubs, the manager and his staff as well.

“He’s still getting to know them, he’s still trying to find the right blend with his team and the longer it goes on the more confident I’ll be that they’ll finish in the top four.”
