Paul Scholes has said it is a ‘risk’ for Manchester United to try and sign Harry Kane this summer.

The Red Devils are keen on bringing Kane from Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the campaign, although ManchesterWorld understands that Victor Osimhen is more likely to be United’s marquee summer arrival with Spurs reluctant to sell to a Premier League rival.

The club’s chairman, Daniel Levy, is renowned for being a tough negotiator, and Scholes feels that pursuing a move for Kane could drag out and dominate the summer, while he isn’t sure the player even wants to move from North London.

“I think the problem with that, I think Harry’s very happy where he is,” the former United midfielder told BT Sport. “If he wanted a move, it would probably have been a few years ago to Man City. I know Daniel Levy was probably playing hard ball on that.

“You look at 25 goals guaranteed. But I think he’s happy where he is. It’s very difficult to make a move. I think it’s a risk for United as well, thinking if you put all of your eggs in that Harry Kane basket and Daniel Levy is messing about and waiting to the last day [of the window]. If you could get him early then brilliant but I just think he is very happy at Tottenham.”

While Scholes is unsure whether Kane is the right man for United, he does feel the club need to add reinforcements in the attacking areas this summer. Erik ten Hag admitted during the week that he’s concerned about how dependent United have become on Marcus Rashford’s goals this season, and Scholes said other players must start chipping in.

“I think goals are the problem and they’re a long way behind City and Arsenal at the top of the table, goal-wise,” claimed the 48-year-old. “I think there are players to score goals. We know what Marcus has done this year, but other players need to chip in.

“You think of Jadon Sancho, Antony, [Alejandro] Garnacho - you need to get them onto 10-15 goals if you’re going to build a team that can challenge for a league title. When I was a player, the strikers were trying to get 70-80 goals between them. Now if Marcus is doing that by himself and others aren’t chipping in.

“You have [Anthony] Martial as well. I think if he’s fit, and that is a very big if because the lad just can’t stay fit, I think you have 20-25 goals in him as well. But I think he [Ten Hag] will go into the transfer market. He needs to try and get more out of his wide players.”
