Paul Scholes has said Casemiro needs ‘help’ in midfield if he’s to succeed at Manchester United and questioned his physical attributes.

The midfielder, who joined the Red Devils in the summer from Real Madrid, has struggled for regular minutes and is yet to start a Premier League game since his arrival.

He did, however, play 82 minutes as United beat Omonia Nicosia 3-2 in the Europa League on Thursday, with Scholes impressed by the Brazilian’s technical ability in the middle.

However, the ex-United star feels Casemiro needs an energetic player like Scott McTominay or Fred alongside him to succeed, while he also questioned whether Bruno Fernandes should remain in the team for Sunday’s game against Everton after a poor run of form.

“I keep going back to the midfield; I think that’s the big question. I think if Casemiro plays he definitely needs somebody next to him,” Scholes said on BT Sport after United’s win over Omonia on Thursday.

“Look, he played for Real Madrid for years and he played in a three all the time with two brilliant players next to him. He needs help; he doesn’t have the greatest of legs, but what he does bring is control, composure, good passing, nice relaxed nature about him, almost like a captain-type character. He’ll need Fred or McTominay with him.

“The interesting thing is Bruno and Eriksen and what he does with that,” Scholes added. “He brought Bruno off after an hour [against Omonia]. He’s been a bit ineffective over the last few weeks so maybe it will be Casemirio, Fred or McTominay and possibly Eriksen. It might be time for Bruno to have a bit of a rest on Sunday.”

The 11-time Premier League champion also gave his view on who should start in attack for United at Goodison Park, agreeing with the view of fellow BT pundit Owen Hargreaves that Erik ten Hag should pick Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo.

“I’d go with that front three, I think at the minute they could be the most dangerous,” said Scholes.

“There are games for Cristiano, I think Sunday could be the game for him. Martial and Rashford pick themselves after tonight, I think they made such a difference in the second half.”
