Manchester United have confirmed the departure of Nathan Bishop to Sunderland, with the goalkeeper joining the Black Cats in a permanent transfer.

The 23-year-old is expected to play back-up to Anthony Patterson at the Stadium of Light this season, with Sunderland kicking off their Championship campaign at home to Ipswich Town on Sunday.

In a statement via their website, the Red Devils said: “Manchester United keeper Nathan Bishop has completed a permanent move to Sunderland for an undisclosed fee.

“Everybody at United would like to wish a hugely popular member of the squad the best of luck at his new club. Manager Erik ten Hag presented Nathan with a shirt signed by the players after the Las Vegas friendly with Borussia Dortmund, in recognition of his contribution and service.”

Bishop joined United from Southend United in January 2020 but never played a senior game for the club. He enjoyed a spell on loan at Mansfield Town in 2020/21, helping the Stags reach the League Two play-off final.

The stopper played mainly for the Under-21 group during his time at United and was part of the goalkeeper’s training group. He was a regular attendee at Old Trafford matches last term, often spotted in the directors’ box.

Upon completing his move to the North-East, Bishop told Sunderland's website: "You see the direction that the club is going, playing young players and allowing them to express themselves and push on in a great league. I think that is so exciting, so I want to come in and earn the right to play for such a great team and a great club.”
