Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag ‘admires’ Chelsea star Mason Mount, according to reports.

The England international’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 16 months and it’s looking increasingly likely that the player will not sign an extension. He’s been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool, but the Evening Standard now claim United could be in the running for his signature.

The outlet state Mount is admired by the United boss, while the midfielder does remain open to renewing his deal at Chelsea even if there are no immediate plans to continue talks.

Goal also report that United are ‘keen’ on signing Mount, with the player’s former manager Thomas Tuchel also interested in bringing the 24-year-old to Bayern Munich. In addition, it’s claimed Liverpool have held ‘productive talks’ with Mount, while his Chelsea future could be impacted by who the club’s next permanent manager is.

“The feeling, from both camps, is that a parting of the ways at the end of this season is both likely and indeed necessary,” Goal add, on Mount’s current situation in West London.

Mount has been with Chelsea for 18 years, but his career has stalled this season under Tuchel and Graham Potter. He has been an unused substitute in the Blues’ last two games - including Tuesday’s 0-0 draw with Liverpool - and has struggled with a recent hip injury.

A move for Mount would add greater depth to United’s creative midfield options, if he were to make the switch to Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes is the only natural fit in that role at present, although Jadon Sancho has played in a no.10 role at times this campaign. Donny van de Beek is another option for Ten Hag, but his career has never taken off at United and he could be allowed to leave the club this summer.
