Both teams were victorious in midweek in the Champions League, winning by the same scoreline of 3-2.

Liverpool played first on Tuesday and beat Atlético Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, with Mo Salah scoring the winner from the spot after they had initially squandered their two-goal advantage.

United, meanwhile, did the opposite and came back from two goals down to claim victory. Marcus Rashford got the first goal in the comeback before Harry Maguire levelled things with 15 minutes remaining - before Ronaldo netted the winner.

In the league, United have a poor run of form and as a result, they have dropped down to sixth, meanwhile Liverpool are second, a point behind league leaders Chelsea, but are the only team in the Premier League not to taste defeat this season.

United have a wretched run of form against Liverpool, winning just once in their last 10 meetings with Liverpool, drawing six matches and losing their last three. Liverpool will want to make the most of that and following a 4-2 win in May at Old Trafford, they are hopeful of securing consecutive league victories at the home of their rivals for the first time since January 2002.

What’s the latest team news?

There are worries over the fitness of both Marcus Rashford and Fred ahead of the match. Rashford has only since returned from shoulder injury but came off injured in the win against Atalanta. Fred, who was playing his first game back from the international break, is also a worry ahead of Sunday’s match.

United will be keen for the England international to play as he is second only to Wayne Rooney for Premier League goals scored against Liverpool with four games in eight appearances.

A big blow could be the absence of Bruno Fernandes, who was reported to be limping in a training session after their win in midweek.

A boost however could be the return of Anthony Martial and Amad Diallo with both pushing for a start, which would give Solskjaer an alternative attacking option. Martial himself has the experience of scoring a match-winning goal against Liverpool, having netted on his debut.

If Fred is ruled out then Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba could form a partnership after the Frenchman’s recent exile from the side.

There is also an opportunity for summer signing Jadon Sancho to stake a claim should Rashford also miss out.

What about the opposition?

For Liverpool, their long-term absentee is Harvey Elliot, who injured his ankle against Leeds United back in September.

Central midfielder Thiago Alcantara will also miss out as he continues to recover from a calf problem, he could be out until after the final international break of the year which is mid November.

Academy starlet Curtis Jones has resumed full training on Friday afternoon and could be a late inclusion, though that will be up for Jurgen Klop to decide whether he is fit enough to play.
