Manchester United summer signing reaches ‘significant milestone’ in recovery from long-term injury

Manchester United provided an update on one of their injured stars.

Leny Yoro has reached a ‘significant milestone’ in his recovery from a long-term injury, with the defender running and kicking a ball on the grass once again.

The Frenchman hasn’t played since suffered a metatarsal fracture in the summer and is yet to make his competitive debut for United since his arrival for a fee of up to £59m.

Yoro picked up the injury during a pre-season friendly against Arsenal on 28 July and underwent surgery at the start of August. At the time the club estimated the 18-year-old would be back around November, a timescale he could still meet with Yoro returning to individual training this week.

United posted images and a video of the ex-Lille man working on the grass, with Yoro also improving his fitness in the gym recently.

“There is plenty of work still to do for the centre-back and he will begin the transition to group training when he is ready,” United added via their website. “A competitive debut for the Reds is not imminent, but it’s really positive to see our summer signing reach this stage of his recovery.”

In Yoro’s absence, United have utilised a mixture of Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof at the heart of defence this season, although Maguire is currently injured.

Fans will be looking forward to getting their first glimpses of the summer signing in the coming months, with the Red Devils delighted to secure his arrival during the off-season. Sporting director Dan Ashworth described Yoro as ‘one of the most exciting young defenders in world football’ when his transfer was confirmed, with Real Madrid also interested in the teenager.

But it was a back four of Diogo Dalot, De Ligt, Evans and Martinez that led United to victory last time out. Erik ten Hag’s side came from a goal down to beat Brentford 2-1 at Old Trafford, with Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund on target. It was a result that saw United move up to 11th in the table after an underwhelming start.
