Manchester United set for £500,000 boost after former player signs for new club
Man Utd offered him a new contract but he turned it down in order to pursue a professional career elsewhere.
Manchester United are set to receive roughly £500,000 after former player Shola Shoretire signed for a new club this week. The 20-year-old officially left Old Trafford as a free agent a month ago, having turned down a new contract offer as he wanted to pursue a career elsewhere.
Shoretire has now officially signed for Greek champions PAOK on a free transfer, but United are still set to receive a small financial boost from his move. The youngster spent nine years in the United academy system and the club are entitled to a compensation fee for their development of the player.
PAOK officially confirmed the signing of Shoretire on a four-year deal earlier this week, with the youngster set to occupy the No.47 shirt he wore at Old Trafford as well. The academy graduate made his senior debut at the age of just 17 and holds the record as the youngest player to represent United in European competition. He was given his first-team debut by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer against Newcastle in February 2021 and four days after that game, he was handed another appearance from the bench against Real Sociedad in the Europa League.
Taking to social media after the move was confirmed, he sent a farewell message to his childhood club. “I joined Manchester United as an 11 year old boy with a dream of one day playing in the first team. I feel extremely proud to be able to say I have achieved that dream. To make it even more special, I was given the opportunity to represent this club in the Premier League and in Europe.
“I’ll forever be grateful to the many players, staff members and supporters that have played a massive part in my journey to this point. From the first day I arrived at the Cliff training ground I have felt at home and part of the MUFC family.”
“It’s been a tough decision for me to leave somewhere that’s been all I’ve known for half of my life but I believe this is the right step for me. Once a red…Thank you Manchester United.”
