Manchester United provide update on future plans to ‘modernise’ Old Trafford

Manchester United have revealed more news on their plans to ‘modernise’ Old Trafford, with the stadium last receiving an update in 2006.

Manchester United’s chief operating officer Collette Roche has provided an update in regards to the club’s plans to ‘modernise Old Trafford in the future.

Speaking at the most recent Fans’ Forum meeting, Roche mentioned United have been speaking to several architectural and engineering companies, who could become their eventual partners for the plans.

In a statement posted on the Red Devils’ website, she said:“These meetings have produced exciting potential ideas, although it’s important to note that we’re still at an early stage and it’s premature to talk about timetables.”

‘No need to relocate’

Roche went on to mention how the club is planning to remain at the current location and modernise the ground in phases, without the need to temporarily relocate elsewhere.

The most recent changes to the stadium came in 2006, when Old Trafford’s capacity was increased by 8,000. However, United’s Chief Operating Officer didn’t confirm if another increase is expected, saying the new project will be “based on analysis and on consultation,” with “no preconceived ideas or limits.”

How much will it cost?

In addition, a budget has not been revealed for the plans, but Roche stated that the Red Devils will consult with their fans in regards to the future of the ground.

“We intend to involve the Fans’ Advisory Board in the process, and we will also keep this Forum briefed,” she told Forum members.

Furthermore, Roche mentioned that due to many legal and regulatory factors involved, the project will be a “complex piece of work,” however, the club is in advanced discussions with the different architectural and engineering companies.

Old Trafford has been the home of United since 1910 and is the biggest club stadium in the UK with a capacity of 73,000.

The Red Devils’ faithful have reacted positively to the news online, with the general feeling that a renovation of the ground is much needed.
