Ruud van Nistelrooy returned Manchester United to winning ways in his first match in charge as interim head coach as they thumped Leicester City 5-2 in the Carabao Cup.
Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes both bagged a brace while Alejandro Garnacho also got on the scoresheet in a quite silly game where United attacked with freedom but were far too loose at the back.
The interim United head coach made four changes from the side that lost 2-1 against West Ham in Erik ten Hag's final game in charge, as Altay Bayindir, Victor Lindelof, Manuel Ugarte and Joshua Zirkzee came in from the start.
It was one of those who kept their place who grabbed the headlines though, as Casemiro fired his side into an early lead with a stunning strike from 25-yards out. United would have a second soon after when Diogo Dalot beat the offside trap and set-up Garnacho at the back-post with an excellent cross into the box.
Leicester grabbed one back against the run of play as Bilal El Khannouss capitalised on an error from Altay Bayindir, but in the blink of an eye, United restored their two-goal lead through a deflected Bruno Fernandes free-kick. Things would get even better before the break as United capitalised on more car crash Leicester defending when Casemiro fired in unmarked from a rebound, but Conor Coady got another back for his side on the stroke of half-time.
It was Leicester who started as the better of the sides after the restart, but United would be the team to find the back of the net again when captain Fernandes capitalised on a poor back pass by Caleb Okoli and fired into an empty net after he had taken the ball past Danny Ward.
Amad Diallo sent a spectacular overhead kick effort just wide of the post with his first touch of the match and at the other end of the pitch Boubakary Soumare smashed an ambitious attempt against the bar.
This is how we rated the United players during the win as they booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup:

9. Bruno Fernandes - 8
A fortunate first goal but a clinically finished second to cap a fine performance. It looks like he'll retain an integral role under another United manager. | Getty Images Photo: Getty Images

10. Marcus Rashford - 6
Didn't have as much joy as Garnacho on the other flank. He is far less of an attacking threat when played on the right, that will be a key issue for the next manager to solve. | Getty Images Photo: Getty Images

11. Alejandro Garnacho - 8
An excellent and energetic attacking performance. He relished the attacking freedom he was granted by Van Nistelrooy and took his first-half goal very well. | Getty Images Photo: Getty Images

12. Joshua Zirkzee - 5
Even on a night where United had so much attacking joy he managed to standout for all the wrong reasons. He dropped far too deep at times and looks low on confidence. | Getty Images Photo: Getty Images
