Manchester United player ratings: 4/10 'nightmare' but 8/10 gem shines in chaotic Tottenham loss - gallery

How the Man Utd players rated in their 4-3 defeat to Spurs in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Altay Bayindir and Lisandro Martinez both struggled as Manchester United were defeated 4-3 by Tottenham Hotspur in a chaotic Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Ruben Amorim made five changes to the side that defeated Man City at the weekend, with Marcus Rashford absent once again, while Alejandro Garnacho started on the bench. Mason Mount missed through injury, while Matthijs de Ligt was not involved due to illness.

Altay Bayindir was another player brought into the line-up and he had the worst possible start to the match when he parried an effort from Pedro Porro that gave Dominic Solanke and Tottenham an early lead in the match. In what was a very open and exciting match, Bayindir saved well to deny Dejan Kulusevski from a tight angle, while Christian Eriksen fired a free-kick over the bar and Rasmus Hojlund volleyed an effort wide from a distance.

There was another injury blow when Victor Lindelof was forced off just before the half-time break as United went in a goal down at the interval. It wouldn't take long for them to go two goals down though, when Kulusevski doubled the lead within a minute of the restart after an awful clearance from Lisandro Martinez presented him with a free effort at goal.

Tottenham were buoyed by the goal and they soon had a third when Solanke took advantage of some more woeful defending from Martinez and fired low beyond Bayindir to put the result to bed.

Ange Postecoglou's side are known for their entertainment though and they gifted United a path back into the match when Fraser Forster passed the ball straight to Bruno Fernandes, who set up substitute Joshua Zirkzee for the easiest goal he will score this season. Tottenham should have learned from their mistake, but United soon had a second when Amad Diallo expertly closed down Forster, who fired his clearance straight at the substitute and into the back of his net.

United smothered Tottenham for the remainder of the match though any chance of a dramatic equaliser were dashed when Son Heung-min scored directly from a corner to seal the victory for his side. Jonny Evans offered another last glimmer of hope when he headed in a third from a stoppage-time corner, though it was too little too late as the home side held on for a place in the semi-finals.
