Suffice to say, the last week has been a particularly miserable one for Manchester United fans - sadly, this misery is showing no signs of alleviation, as it has recently been reported that Casemiro is set to be out of action for ‘several weeks’ with a hamstring injury.

This is according to a statement issued on Manchester United’s official club website - in an interview with Erik ten Hag featured in the London Evening Standard, the Dutchman confirmed that Casemiro would ‘definitely’ miss out on Saturday’s game against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

The 31-year-old was brought off at half-time during United’s 3-0 midweek defeat against Newcastle United in the EFL Cup. His injury has been revealed as the reason for his departure from the field - it’s unclear as to when he’ll return.

Casemiro’s injury is certainly a blow to an already-depleted United squad, but it should be mentioned that he looks to be a far cry from the player he was last season. So far, he has made eight Premier League appearances this season, scoring a single goal along the way.

Who can take Casemiro’s place in the squad?

Thankfully for the Red Devils, they purchased a perfectly adequate backup to Casemiro in the summer transfer window - Sofyan Amrabat. In the Brazilian’s absence, it’s likely that he will be used to fill the gaps.

Amrabat, like the majority of United’s summer signings, has yet to set the world alight at Old Trafford. He enjoyed a sensational World Cup campaign with Morocco in 2022, but he has yet to hit those heights at club level since this.

He isn’t the only player who could fill in for Casemiro - Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen can both play in this role, but they are more suited to being fielded in other positions.
