The 2021/22 Premier League title race went right down to the wire as Manchester City secured the trophy with a final day win against Aston Villa.
Meanwhile, across the city it was a miserable campaign at Old Trafford as Manchester United finished a disappointing sixth.
However, an entirely hypothetical change to the ways points are distributed could have seen things become even worse for the Red Devils and also see City miss out on the title.
As we know, teams get three points for a win and one for a draw after each of their Premier League fixtures but what if points were distributed based on a teams aggregate results (home and away) against each of their 19 opponents?
The two Manchester sides aren’t the only clubs who would see their final league positions altered for better or worse.
The likes of Arsenal and Burnley would certainly have prefered it be decided this way while it would have been catastrophic for Southampton and Chelsea.
Thanks to statistics site journalistic.org, we can see what an aggregate scoring system would have done to the table as Odds-Comparison.com trawled through every Premier League result across the 2021/22 this season to create an aggregate scoreline between each team and compiled all results.
Here is how that table would look:
