Manchester United have continuously been linked with a number of new players - plus talk of high-profile exits.

Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard are just two of the players who could leave Old Trafford before September as the club looks to appoint its new permanent boss in the summer.

Ralf Rangnick was brought in after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s exit in November on a temporary basis as manager and for a further two years as part of the top managerial team.

The season started with United struggling to maintain even a middle-order position, and now they are fighting with Arsenal and West Ham for that final Champions League spot.

Having been kicked out of the Carabao Cup in the third round and the FA Cup in the fourth, if United end this season trophyless yet again it will be the club’s most unsuccessful period in Old Trafford history since the nine-year drought between the European Cup in 1968 and the FA Cup in 1977.

Here is all the latest on Manchester United’s transfer updates from today…

United have ‘made offer’ for Bundesliga star

Borussia Dortmund are another club who appear to be facing mounting pressure and rising criticism after their shock Europa League exit after defeat by Rangers.

The problems seen in matches have greatly reflected the problems that are surfacing off the pitch, with squad issues emerging and the club’s financial situation exacerbated after Covid-19.

Sportbild via Sport Witness have, however, recently reported that elements of the financial strain could be eased by the interest United have shown in Manuel Akanji. In fact, the German news outlet has gone so far as to say that ‘an offer has been made’ but the details of this offer remain unclear.

This is not the first time the Swiss footballer has been linked with a move to the Red Devils and Rangnick is often said to be a firm fan of the defender.

Akanji has reportedly rejected an offer from his current club to stay with Dortmund and has always dreamt of playing in the Premier League, citing United as a key target.

The German journalist, Patrick Berger, has also hinted that United have offered the Swiss 26-year-old an offer of a four-year-contract with a salary of €15 million.

Rangnick ‘ruled out’ of permanent managerial position

ManchesterWorld reported yesterday how United’s football director John Murtough said the search for a new permanent boss to replace Ralf Rangnick was underway - and that the successful candidate would be in place “this summer.”

The Sun is now reporting that United top brass have all but ruled out their temporary manager from taking the permanent position in the dugout, despite previous hints from the German he’d consider the job on a longer-term basis.

Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax’s Erik ten Hag remain among the bookies’ favourites.

Murtough hinted the new boss was expected to bring in much-needed silverware, adding: “We know that consistency is key as we strive for a top-four finish this season.

“I want to reiterate, however, that this is not the ultimate objective for Manchester United — and everyone at the club is focused on challenging for the top trophies.”
