Manchester United are targeting attacking reinforcements this summer after a disappointing campaign for their forwards.

Despite the excitement of Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford at the start of the season, the 37-year-old has struggled for goals since the turn of the year.

Meanwhile, Mason Greenwood has been banned by the club following his arrest, while Edinson Cavani has only two goals in an injury-ravaged season.

One striker the Red Devils have long been linked with is Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, and they have now reportedly been handed a boost in their pursuit.

Ralf Rangnick’s side have surged into the lead in the race for Kane, according to BILD.

This is because Manchester City have now ‘cooled’ their interest in their summer target in favour of pursuing Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland.

United’s local rivals were very close to signing Kane in the summer after seeing a bid for over £100 million rejected by Spurs.

However, if the Red Devils are to take advantage of City’s diverted focus then they will have to pay a hefty fee for Kane.

Despite Kane turning 30 this year, it is unlikely Daniel Levy will be willing to lower his £150 million valuation.

The striker struggled at the start of the campaign, with his failed departure causing anger among fans, however he has since recaptured his form and has now scored 15 goals this season.

One potential arrival that could tempt Kane into making the move to Old Trafford is Mauricio Pochettino.

The Paris Saint-Germain boss has been heavily linked with United since he left Spurs in 2019 and is currently the favourite to replace Rangnick in the summer.

If Pochettino is appointed the Red Devils’ new permanent coach then he could be eager to reunite with his former star striker in Manchester.
