Manchester United 'keen' on summer transfer for 23-goal striker along with Arsenal

Manchester United have the chance to bolster their ranks in January

Manchester United lost 1-0 away at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. James Maddison’s first-half goal was enough for the hosts to pick up all three points for the hosts.

Ruben Amorim’s side weren’t able to find an equaliser in the end and missed a couple of chances in the match. It was another frustrating performance for the Red Devils and they struggled to truly stamp their mark on the game.

Injury issues meant their bench at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium was made up full of youngsters. 17-year-old Chido Obi was brought on as United’s only substitute near the end but it was too little, too late.

Manchester United eye Mateo Retegui

United are ‘keen’ on Atalanta striker Mateo Retegui ahead of the summer, according to CaughtOffside. Fellow top flight side Arsenal have also been mentioned as a potential suitor as they chase down Liverpool at the top of the table.

Retegui, 25, has been in fine form so far in this campaign and appears to be a man in-demand now. He has scored 23 goals in 34 games in all competitions, 20 of which have come in Serie A, and has caught the eye.

It has been well documented how much Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal need a new option in attack so they could provide some strong competition for United. He has proved he can score goals for fun over in Italy and may want to test himself in England now.

Retegui is an Italy international with 18 caps under his belt, despite the fact he was born and grew up in Argentina. He has had spells in the past at Boca Junior and Genoa and would give the Red Devils more competition and depth up top if they were able to lure him to Old Trafford.

What now for Manchester United?

Ruben Amorim’s side take on in-form Everton next weekend. David Moyes’ side won 2-1 at Crystal Palace just a few days after a dramatic 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Goodison Park.

The Toffees are now unbeaten in five games and Moyes said ahead of the clash with United: “I want us to get better - playing better, scoring more goals, making more chances - that's what I'm really pushing now. We've still got a bit to do to be safe in the Premier League, but it's certainly looking a lot rosier and it's beginning to look that our new stadium hopefully will be getting used for Premier League games. But we can't talk too much about it until we get it done.

“I have to say, we've got a run of hard games coming up. I thought today was a really hard game, too. We've won away at Brighton, now we've won away at Crystal Palace, and that's a great return for us. We had fantastic support from the supporters again today as well. They were here in numbers, as they do, and I think everybody's still a bit euphoric from the midweek, still a bit emotional, so it was a great effort from the players to get a result, backed brilliantly.”
