Manchester United star 'expected' to leave at end of 2024/25 Premier League season despite strong form
A Manchester United star will likely leave the club at the end of the season.
Christian Eriksen has been one of Manchester United’s standout midfielders in the 2024/25 season - nevertheless, the Danish international is ‘still’ expected to depart the club at the end of the current campaign.
Currently, United and Eriksen are not undergoing talks regarding a new contract and they are not looking to open them any time soon - as such, he will most likely become a free agent when the summer rolls around. This is according to a post on X (formerly Twitter) from Fabrizio Romano, who wrote: “Manchester United and Christian Eriksen are still expected to part ways at the end of the season. No negotiations taking place over new deal, while Rúben Amorim’s opinion will also be considered - but Eriksen’s expected to leave.”
Eriksen’s current deal at United is due to expire in the summer. With no new deal on the horizon, it seems that his days in Manchester are becoming increasingly numbered. He joined the club on a free transfer from Brentford in 2022, having made 58 appearances in the Premier League since then. Nevertheless, with a new manager incoming in the form of Ruben Amorim, this could change in an instant. He has yet to make a decision on the 32-year-old’s future, with the incoming manager likely to take time before considering his options for the 2025/26 campaign.
Should Eriksen leave the club at the end of the season, he will need to be replaced. He is United’s best playmaker in the middle of the park and can always be relied upon to pick out a teammate - none of their other midfielders can match his playmaking or passing ability. A strong creative influence who brings a calmness to United’s play, he is necessary for unlocking tight defences.
In a recent interview, Eriksen lifted the lid on his status at United, saying [via the Daily Mirror]: “I haven't focused on it yet, and I haven't heard anything from the club. Right now it's just about football, and then we have to see where we stand in January and for that matter in the summer. As a footballer, you just turn up and train, and then it is the coach who decides the team at the weekend. I have not set my hopes or expectations. It belongs to football.”
So far this season, Eriksen has made 13 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, scoring four goals and notching up three assists - however, none of these have come in the Premier League.
Previous to his time at Old Trafford, Eriksen played for clubs such as Brentford, Inter Milan and Ajax. He is best known for his time at Tottenham Hotspur, where he made 226 Premier League appearances and scored 51 goals in England’s top division.
Furthermore, he has also been a constant member of the Danish national squad - he has won 140 caps for his country, scoring 43 goals along the way. Generally regarded as one of the greatest Danish players of all time, he has been playing for them since 2010.
