Manchester United 'enquire' about €60m Andre Onana replacement wanted by Tottenham Hotspur

Goalkeeper Andre Onana has been one of the biggest talking points at United in the past few weeks as he has made some crucial mistakes in-between the posts. The 2-2 draw against Lyon in the Europa League highlighted his issues, as the Cameroon international was at fault for both goals that the French side scored.

Ruben Amorim dropped Onana after that game in favour of Altay Bayindir, who had a poor game against Newcastle United when they lost 4-1. Since then, reports have suggested that United are likely to sign a new keeper in the summer transfer window.

In his most recent press conference, Amorim was asked whether he needs a new goalkeeper. He skirted around the question before responding to a Journalist who suggested that he was avoiding an answer. He said: “You choose the questions, I choose the answer.”

United enquire about Frankfurt keeper Santos

In recent days, United have been linked to several goalkeepers as they look to fix their issues at the position this summer. However, the most recent is Frankfurt number one Kaua Santos, who is becoming a hot property.

Santos, 22, has made 13 appearances this season, conceding 18 goals and keeping three clean sheets. He has taken over as the first-choice keeper at Frankfurt from 34-year-old Kevin Trapp.

According to a report by German outlet Sport Bild, United have made an enquiry to sign Santos. It says that several top European clubs have got the Brazilian keeper on their shortlist, especially after his performance against Tottenham in the Europa League last week.

The report says that Tottenham’s technical director, Johan Lange, asked about his availability after the game, and that United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell also made enquiries about the 22-year-old.

Frankfurt are reportedly asking for €60 million (£51m) for the goalkeeper, which is slightly more than United paid for Onana in 2023, a fee of £47.2m.

Which other keepers could Man United sign?

Santos is one of several goalkeepers linked with a move to Man United in recent weeks amid Onana’s poor performances. One name that has been heavily linked is Lille FC keeper Lucas Chevalier.

The Frenchman has conceded just 48 goals in 43 games for Lille, keeping 12 clean sheets this season. He also earned his first call-up for the France national team in March, although didn’t get to play a minute.

Burnley stopper James Trafford has also been linked with a move to United after what has been a historic season for the 22-year-old, conceding just 13 goals and keeping 28 clean sheets in 41 Championship games. Newcastle have also been strongly linked to signing Trafford as they look for a long-term replacement for Martin Dubravka.

However, despite all the reports and pressure surrounding Onana, the United keeper has reportedly expressed his desire to stay with the Red Devils as he has bought a new house and that his family are settled in North-West England. Aaron Ramsdale is another who has been linked with a move this week.
