Manchester derby: Which Manchester United manager has the best record against Manchester City?

The Red Devils face Manchester City again at the Etihad this weekend.

Ralf Rangnick will become the sixth manager to take charge of a Manchester United team in a Premier League Manchester derby, when he brings his side to the Etihad this weekend.

The German follows Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who have led the Red Devils into matches against Manchester City since 1992, and it’s also the first time the German will have faced Pep Guardiola in his career.

Of course, it was Solskjaer who was in charge last November when the teams previously locked horns, with an Eric Bailly own-goal and a Bernardo Silva strike ensuring City won 2-0, while it also proved to be Solskjaer’s penultimate game in charge.

Despite that, United have had a decent record in recent years at the Etihad and have only lost there once since 2016.

Sunday’s match will also be the 50th Premier League meeting between the teams, with United winning 24 of the previous 49 and City emerging victorious on 16 occasions. There have also been nine draws.

Another win for the Red Devils this weekend would be a welcome boost for their hopes of securing a Champions League place, especially with Arsenal facing a relatively kind fixture against Watford a few hours before the derby kicks off.

Ahead of Rangnick’s first Manchester derby, we have a look at how his predecessors have fared in this fixture during the Premier League era.
