Manchester clubs discover League Cup third-round opponents

The draw was made on Wednesday night after the culmination of the second round.

Manchester United and Manchester City have discovered who they will face in the third round of the League Cup.

The Red Devils have a tough home tie against West Ham United, who they faced in the FA Cup last season. As for City, they have a slightly more favourable fixture against Wycombe Wanderers

The ties will be played on the week commencing 20th September, most likely on 21st and 22nd September.

City are aiming to win the competition for a remarkable fifth year in a row, and have claimed the trophy the joint-most of any side in England (eight) along with Liverpool.

Pep Guardiola’s men beat Tottenham Hotspur in the final last season with Aymeric Laporte grabbing the only goal of the game.

As for United, they have reached the semi-finals in each of the last two years, with City eliminated them on both occasion.

The third-round draw, which was carried out by ex-strikers Kevin Phillips and Kevin Campbell, was made on Wednesday after the end of the second-round fixtures. United and City join at this stage due to their involvement in European competitions, along with Chelsea, Liverpool, Leicester City, West Ham and Tottenham.
