Erik ten Hag’s men ensured they’ll be in the knockout stages of the Europa League, courtesy of a 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday, while the Hammers beat Silkeborg to guarantee top spot in their Europa Conference League group.

But when the sides lock horns at the weekend, the focus will very much be on domestic matters. The Red Devils are unbeaten in four in the league and are sixth at present, just a point off the Champions League spots. As for David Moyes’s side, they’re 10th in the table and beat Bournemouth 2-0 on Monday night.

But United will be without French duo Raphael Varane and Anthony Martial for Sunday’s game. Ten Hag confirmed on Wednesday that the former will not be involved again before the World Cup, while he revealed after the midweek win over Sheriff Tiraspol that Anthony Martial has suffered a setback on his back injury.

“He [Martial] is making progress, he’s outside, he’s working there, he’s on the pitch and we’re waiting for his step back in team training,” said Ten Hag. The Dutchman also revealed ahead of the Sheriff game that Aaron Wan-Bissaka was in contention to make the substitutes’ bench, although the defender ultimately wasn’t deemed fit enough and is therefore a doubt for this weekend.

As for the Hammers, Moyes confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Lucas Paqeuta won’t feature. “He won’t be available until next week,” the former United boss said ahead of another return to Old Trafford.

Nayef Aguerd made his West Ham debut on Thursday night but won’t be among the squad that makes the journey to Manchester on Sunday. “I don’t think he’s ready for the Premier League games but we’ll see for the European games,” Moyes stated on Wednesday ahead of the Silkeborg match.

At the same time he also gave an update on Craig Dawson and Maxwell Cornet. “Cornet has had a small setback in training so he’s not available [for Thursday], Dawson is improving but is not fit enough for the game.” The West Ham manager hasn’t spoken about the duo since and, as a result, their participation in Sunday’s game is in doubt.

Another player who may miss out is Jarrod Bowen. We need to see how Jarrod is,” Moyes said on Friday. “We need to see if he can do many things. We need to see if he can twist and turn – all the other parts that come [with playing football].

“Every club is the same with the amount of fixtures, there are always chances there are injuries or knocks. But hopefully, we have come through last night not too bad,” he added.

Ruled out: Varane, Martial (United); Paqueta, Aguerd (West Ham)

Doubts: Wan-Bissaka (United); Dawson, Bowen, Cornet (West Ham)
