Manchester United could be without five players for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Southampton.

Erik ten Hag said in his pre-match press conference that Christian Eriksen will play again this season, but the former Tottenham Hotspur man is still a long way from returning to the team, as is Donny van de Beek, who has a knee injury. Anthony Martial also isn’t expected to be back in time for the weekend, although he is training with the first team again following a hip issue which has prevented him from starting a game since January.

“I think all the time we had a good plan and it worked until now not always good,” Ten Hag explained, when asked about Martial’s recuperation. “But he is on his way back, he’s back in training but we will be cautious, yeah.”

Marcel Sabitzer is another doubt for United after he sat out the 4-1 Europa League win over Real Betis on Thursday night with a knock. It’s unclear whether he’ll be involved for the visit of the Saints, with Ten Hag not asked about the Austrian ahead of the game.

Diogo Dalot is United’s final fitness concern. The Portugal defender was replaced at half-time in the last-16 first-leg win on Thursday night, with it not clear if that decision was due to selection or because of a knock.

Southampton interim manager Ruben Selles said on Friday that he’s expecting rotation from Ten Hag with the game sandwiched between the two Europa League matches against Betis. The Spaniard also confirmed Juan Larios and Tino Livramento will be out for the next few weeks.

Charly Alcaraz is a doubt for the game with a knee injury he sustained when celebrating his goal in last week’s win over Leicester City. "Charly was with us in training. He is doing better, but we still need to see if he will be with us for the final session and be in the squad on Sunday," he said. "Everyone else is available,” said Selles.

Doubts: Dalot, Sabitzer (United); Alvarez (Southampton)

Ruled out: Eriksen, Van de Beek, Martial (United); Larios, Livramento (Southampton)
