Manchester United will face Newcastle United in the final of the 2023 Carabao Cup.

The Red Devils beat Nottingham Forest over two legs in the semi-final, winning 3-0 at the City Ground before they earned a 2-0 victory in the second leg on Wednesday, thanks to goals from Anthony Martial and Fred at Old Trafford. As for Newcastle, they overcame Southampton 3-1 on aggregate and progressed to their first major cup final since 1999.

The Magpies have never won the competition although they were beaten finalists in 1975/76. United, meanwhile, last won the EFL Cup in 2017, beating Southampton in the final, and are five-time winners.

The final will be held at Wembley on Sunday 26 February and kicks off at 4:30pm.

Route to the final

United made it to the final after getting past Aston Villa in round three, before beating Burnley and Charlton Athletic in the subsequent stages. A two-legged semi-final victory over Forest ensued, as United hunt down their first silverware in nearly six years.

As for Eddie Howe’s side, they eliminated Tranmere Rovers, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Leicester City and then Southampton in the Carabao Cup.

Impact on Premier League fixtures

United’s league game against Brentford, originally set to be played on 26 February, has been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date. The final will also take place just three days after the Red Devils’ Europa League second leg encounter against Barcelona. Newcastle had previously been scheduled to play Brighton & Hove Albion on the last weekend of February, but that will now be staged later.
