Manchester United will be without Bruno Fernandes for Tuesday’s Carabao Cup encounter with Charlton Athletic.

The League One side travel to Old Trafford for a quarter-final tie, having previously eliminated Queens Park Rangers, Walsall, Stevanage and Brighton & Hove Albion in the competition. As for United, they have beaten Aston Villa and Burnley to make it to the last eight of the competition.

Fernandes picked up a booking in both games meaning he is suspended for the midweek fixture, with Erik ten Hag likely to select Scott McTominay or Fred in a more advanced role. Donny van de Beek would have been the ideal replacement, but he’s out following the nasty knee injury he suffered last week against Bournemouth, although there is yet to be a prognosis on the severity of the problem.

Axel Tuanzebe is also out, while Jadon Sancho remains on the sidelines. Asked last week for the latest on the winger, Ten Hag revealed he is not fit but added the former Borussia Dortmund star is back in training at Carrington.

“I would like to have Jadon back as soon as possible,” the United manager said on Friday. “But also in this, I can’t force this process. So I will do everything that’s in my power but some processes you can’t force and this is one of them so I also have to show patience.”

Meanwhile, Ten Hag could look to give several key men such as David de Gea, Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Anthony Martial a night off. Ten Hag admitted after Friday’s win over Everton that the latter is struggling with his fitness levels at present and can’t play successive 90-minute matches. Should De Gea be rested, Jack Butland could make his United debut.

As for Charlton, Mandela Egbo and Diallang Jaiyesimi are ruled out through injury, as is goalkeeper Joe Wollacott. Fellow stopper Ashley Maynard-Brewer could also be ruled out due to a concussion protocol and will need a check up before the match. Attacker Chuks Aneke is another doubt due to a hamstring issue.

Doubts: Maynard-Brewer, Aneke (Charlton)

Ruled out: Tuanzebe, Van de Beek, Fernandes, Sancho (United); Wollacott, Egbo, Jaiyesimi (Charlton)
