There was a time when Manchester United vs Charlton Athletic was a regular fixture in English football, be it in the Premier League or the old Division One.
The Red Devils and the Addicks have faced off 35 times in competitive action dating back to their first meeting - a 2-0 win for Charlton. Recent years have seen the two clubs separated in the EFL pyramid but the previous recent history was very much dominated by United who have won the 10 previous meeting of the two clubs.
The last time they faced off was during the 2006/07 Premier League seasons, Charlton’s last in the top flight to date, and there were several familiar faces in the United squad that day. Here is how Sir Alex Ferguson’s team line-up against this week’s EFL Cup opponents almost 17 years ago in a 2-0 victory at Old Trafford.
