Manchester United return to competitive action on Wednesday when they host Burnley in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

It’s the Red Devils’ first match since 13 November when Erik ten Hag’s side beat Fulham 2-1 at Craven Cottage, while Burnley have played twice since then, against Queens Park Rangers and Middlesbrough. With so many United players at the World Cup, Ten Hag will have to field a makeshift side with several stars yet to return to the club following their involvement in Qatar.

Man Utd team news

The majority of United players who featured at the World Cup whave returned to training but it’s unclear who will be fit to start for the Red Devils on Wednesday. Christian Eriksen and Facundo Pellistri are the exceptions, however, and were spotted back at Carrington last week, meaning they could play for the Red Devils.

Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, Fred, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Bruno Fernandes have all been back in training, but the majority aren’t expected to start against Burnley. Diogo Dalot is also a doubt with a hamstring injury.

Ten Hag opted to select Martin Dubravka in nets for the last Carabao Cup outing, a 4-2 win over Aston Villa, and could do the same again against Burnley. Alternatively, first-choice David de Gea is available.

In defence, Victor Lindelof, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Brandon Williams started in United’s two friendly matches in Spain over the break and could play at Old Trafford, although Teden Mengi’s injury against Real Betis does pose a problem. It means United may have to hand Maguire a return to the team earlier than planned.

Scott McTominay, Eriksen and Donny van de Beek look the most likely to start in midfield, although Zidane Iqbal is another option. Van de Beek did miss the Betis loss with a knock but has since been seen in training.

Ten Hag may also opt to deploy the same front three against Burnley that started in both friendlies, with Alejandro Garnacho, Anthony Martial and Anthony Elanga tipped to face the Clarets.

Predicted XI: Dubravka; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof, Williams; McTominay, Eriksen; Garnacho, Van de Beek, Elanga; Martial.
