Erik ten Hag has revealed Marcel Sabitzer is out of the Manchester United squad for Thursday night’s Europa League clash against Real Betis.

The Red Devils return to European action following Sunday’s humiliation at Anfield, where United lost 7-0. But prior to that, Ten Hag’s side had been in great form and last month beat Barcelona over two legs to set up a last-16 tie with Betis.

Including pre-season, Betis are the fourth La Liga side to travel to Old Trafford this season, along with Barcelona, Real Sociedad and Rayo Vallecano. The Seville-based club will be at Old Trafford on Thursday night, with the second leg to be played next week in Spain.

Speaking ahead of the first meeting, Ten Hag was asked for a fitness update on the squad and explained Sabitzer will be out alongside Anthony Martial, despite the latter being spotted taking part in Wednesday’s full-training session.

"We have a strong programme,” Ten Hag told MUTV on Wednesday. “But I think we are quite good. The only disappointment is Marcel Sabitzer is not available, as well as Anthony Martial.

"Anthony Martial is back on the pitch, so we will see. For the rest, everyone is available and we are ready for the game.’’

The duo are joined on the sidelines by long-term absentees Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek, with the latter not set to play again this season due to a knee issue, while Eriksen is expected to return around April or May when he recovers from an ankle injury.

Meanwhile, Betis manager Manuel Pelligrini will hope Sergio Canales is back in time for the clash at Old Trafford. The midfielder has missed the last two matches but was included in the travelling squad that was announced on Wednesday.

Also named in the party were ex-Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo and on-loan Leicester City attacker Ayoze Perez. Other recognisable names include Joaquin, William Carvalho and German Pezzella, with the latter playing in the 2022 World Cup final.

However, Nabil Fekir has not travelled to England after he sustained a serious knee injury and won’t play again this season. Juan Cruz is also out due to injury.

Doubt: Canales (Betis)

Ruled out: Eriksen, Sabitzer, Van de Beek, Martial (United); Cruz, Fekir (Betis)
