Ralf Rangnick has said it is ‘definitely possible’ that he will make significant changes to his Manchester United team for the visit of Young Boys on Wednesday.

For the Red Devils, the Champions League clash is an almost meaningless game as they’ve already secured top spot in the group, although the Swiss side could still finish third and will be determined to emerge from Old Trafford with all three points.

But given the significance of the game for United, and that this is the third of four consecutive weeks where United face a midweek game, Rangnick is expected to rotate his squad at Old Trafford.

However, as the German explained on Sunday, following United’s 1-0 win over Crystal Palace, the rules for registering players could limit his options for Wednesday.

"It’s definitely possible we bring some fresh players because the next game is coming up on Saturday, an away game at Norwich,” Rangnick told reporters in his post-match press conference. “It is possible; we will speak about that tomorrow [Monday] at Carrington.

"The problem is we can only play players who are in the Champions League list. For example, Phil Jones, who I would love to give game time on Wednesday after his long-term injury, unfortunately, he is not on the list, so we have to put our focus on players who will be allowed to play and are on the list.

"Yes, it is possible, I don’t know if we play a completely new 10 players because I don’t know if we have enough players on the list but it’s definitely possible that we play with some new players."

Which players are on the Champions League list?

United’s Champions League squad is made up of 30 players, most of who are part of the first-team unit, however there are a few youngsters also included.

Anthony Elanga, who came on in the Palace victory, is part of United’s Champions League list and might be handed a starting spot on Wednesday.

So too, could youth-team player Teden Mengi, who has played in Europe before for United. The promising Hannibal is also on the list but will miss out through injury.

It’s not just youngsters who could get a run out on Wednesday, but fringe players such as Dean Henderson, Eric Bailly, Juan Mata, Amad, Nemanja Matic and Donny van de Beek may be given some game time.

Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial might also play their first minutes under Rangnick, although both missed the win over Palace with knocks.
