Manchester United are approaching their long-awaited return to competitive action this week as they host Burnley in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night. The match will see former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany make his first appearance at Old Trafford as a manager.

United will be desperate to kick off the rest of the campaign with a win, despite falling to defeat in both of their friendlies against Cadiz and Real Betis earlier this month. The Red Devils had lost only one of their previous 12 matches in all competitions prior to the World Cup and will be confident of picking up where they left off on home soil. Meanwhile, the Clarets will be eager to cause an upset after enjoying some exceptional form of their own. The Championship club currently sit three points clear at the top of the second tier and have won eight out of their nine previous matches.

While Erik ten Hag’s side will be fully confident of a win at Old Trafford tomorrow, their long list of potential absentees will be a concern for the Dutchman following the World Cup. Here is United’s team news ahead of the cup clash.

Man Utd vs Burnley team news

The Red Devils could face Burnley without a number of players who have recently featured at the World Cup, with centre-back pairing of Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez definitely out after competing in Sunday’s finale. However, Christian Eriksen, Facundo Pellistri, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, Fred, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Bruno Fernandes are all back in training following their involvement in Qatar.

It’s unclear which those players are fit to start, although Diogo Dalot is a doubt with a hamstring issue. Meanwhile, the match could come too early for Axel Tuanzebe who only returned to training last week after missing the whole season to date through injury, while Teden Mengi was stretchered off in United’s defeat to Real Betis - meaning Maguire is unlikely to be given any more rest due to the lack of defensive options available to Ten Hag.

Jadon Sancho will also be absent after recently being placed on an individual fitness programme that saw him miss out on their training camp in Spain. It is unclear when the winger will be back in training, with United’s first Premier League match back against Nottingham Forest only days away.

As for Burnley, they will be without Connor Roberts after he was sent off during their win over Middlesbrough, while Scott Twine is sidelined with an injury after picking up an injury in his cameo appearance last time out. City defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis is likely to start at the back for the Clarets after joining on loan in the summer.

Man Utd potential line-up: Dubravka; Wan-Bissaka, Maguire, Lindelof, Malacia; McTominay, Eriksen; Elanga, Van de Beek, Garnacho; Martial.

Burnley potential line-up: Peacock-Farrell; Lowton, Harwood-Bellis, Beyer, Maatsen; Cullen, Bastien, Benson, Brownhill, Churlinov; Barnes.
