Ralf Rangnick has revealed that Luke Shaw might not be fit to start in time for Manchester United’s clash with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday night.

Shaw was one of three players who were doubts following the weekend win over Tottenham Hotspur, with Rangnick saying after the game that he was unsure whether Shaw, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes would be involved due to illness and injury.

However, all three were involved in United training on Monday morning, as confirmed via the club’s website, and it was assumed they would be fit for the last-16 second leg.

But speaking in the pre-match press conference, Rangnick gave an update and explained that Shaw is a doubt.

“As it is right now, we have all of the players available for tomorrow,” he told reporters via video link. “There's a small question mark on Luke Shaw.

“He has been training yesterday and today, but we have to wait and see until he is fully fit to see if he's available for the game. All the other players are back in training and ready for tomorrow.”

Alex Telles was also the player selected alongside Rangnick for the press conference, which is an often an indication he will start the game. Telles’ involvement at left-back is, therefore, another hint that Shaw won’t be fit to start.

But it looks to be better news surrounding Fernandes and McTominay, and Rangnick was asked to clarify whether Fernandes posted a false positive Covid-19 result at the weekend, as was the case with David De Gea.

Rangnick didn’t give too much information away regarding Saturday, but said: “He was tested yesterday and tested negative, that’s why he trained today.”

What about Atletico?

As is customary with teams travelling in Europe, Atletico announced their squad ahead of the trip to England on Monday.

Included in it were the likes of Jan Oblak, Joao Felix, Antoine Greizmann and ex-Liverpool forward Luis Suarez.

Captain Koke was also part of the group, after he missed the first leg due to a muscle injury. However, the 30-year-old did play 45 minutes at the weekend, in a 2-1 win over Cadiz.

Two noticeable absentees from the Atletico line-up were Sime Vrsaljko and Thomas Lemar, both of whom are injured. Yannick Carrasco is still suspended from the group stages, while Matheus Cunha and Daniel Wass are long-term injuries.
