Manchester United finally return to action on Wednesday when they take on Championship high-flyers Burnley in the Carabao Cup. The Red Devils have been more than a month without competitive action due to the World Cup, but club football has now resumed, and the cup clash should serve as a nice reintroduction ahead of the Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest a day after Boxing Day.

Erik ten Hag’s men need to improve significantly if they want to land a top four spot this season. But as they prepare to get back to it, we have rounded up all the latest news and headlines surrounding Old Trafford.

Ferdinand plea

Rio Ferdinand has called upon United to sign Borussia Dortmund and England star Jude Bellingham.

“Jude Bellingham has been a phenomenon at the World Cup,” Ferdinand said on his YouTube channel. “He has announced himself to the world now that he’s a player here to say. He has got so much growth, room for improvement still, but he absolutely influenced games in an England shirt like we’ve never seen a teenager do for England.

“Manchester United, bring him here. Make that your home, Jude. You come and help shift the culture and take the club to the heights it should be at!’ He’s been flying the flag abroad, he’s done his bit in Germany, it’s time to come home baby.”

De Jong latest

United are still said to be interested in Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong. The Red Devils tried to sign the Dutch midfielder all summer but to no avail, with De Jong deciding he did not want to leave Barca. Nothing suggests that has changed, but it’s claimed Ten Hag remains keen. According to 90min, United still want to take De Jong to Old Trafford, and they haven’t ruled out making another run at the deal.
