Marcus Rashford could not hide his delight as Manchester United picked up three points from a ‘massive game’ against Liverpool.

The Red Devils deservedly took a narrow lead into half-time as winger Jason Sancho showed remarkable composure to put his side in front with quarter of an hour on the clock.

The advantage was doubled when Rashford raced on to a pass from Anthony Martial and expertly slotted the ball beyond Alisson eight minutes into the second-half.

Mohamed Salah pulled a goal back for Liverpool as the game made its way into the final 10 minutes, but a dogged defensive display ensured Erik ten Hag’s side held on to collect their first points of the Premier League season.

Rashford believes United benefited from utilising a ‘higher tempo’ that laid the foundations for the win and paid tribute to his side’s defensive display during the closing-stages as their visitors went in search of a late equaliser.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s obviously a massive game for the club. I’ve always said regardless of the circumstances, you’re in a game against Liverpool, it’s massive, no matter what circumstances you are in.

“Today was massive so it was good to pick up the first win.  We started the game at a higher tempo, we were tired towards the end, but we kept going and stuck at it.

“They got a goal back and we didn’t fold, we kept defending well and it was an enjoyable game to play in.”

Rashford’s second-half strike opened his account for the season as he struck his first Premier League goal since he netted a dramatic late winner against West Ham United in January.

The goal had all of the hallmarks of a strike that Rashford has scored on numerous occasions since he broke into the United senior setup seven years ago.

The attacker admitted he could have added to his tally throughout the game but promised he will ‘keep working hard’ as he looks to get on the scoresheet on a more regular basis throughout the remainder of the season.

“It was a goal I’ve scored quite regularly so it is important for me to get those types of goals,” he said.

“I knew I felt I was in good areas, good positions.  On another day I could have had a few more goals.

“I’ll just keep going, keep working hard and focus on the next game.”
