Man Utd 'target' striker who has already scored twice against Red Devils after summer Chelsea move 'collapsed'

The 20-year-old made a huge impression against Man Utd earlier this season

Manchester United have plenty of work to do in the summer transfer window if they are once again going to establish themselves as one of England’s elite teams.

As it stands, the Red Devils are on course for their worst season since their relegation under Tommy Docherty in 1974 and fans are becoming increasingly concerned about the team’s lack of goals after a 1-0 defeat to Spurs at the weekend. It marked United’s ninth blank in front of goal of the league season and the sixth in just 14 league games under Amorim - meaning the Red Devils have failed to score in 42.8% of his top-flight games as manager.

Summer signing Joshua Zirkzee and the club’s second most expensive striker of all-time Rasmus Hoijlund have both failed to deliver in front of goal, leaving United scouring the market for a clinical number nine.

Man Utd plot blockbuster move for FC Porto striker

FC Porto talisman Samu Omorodion has emerged as one of United’s main striker targets this summer as the Red Devils consider potential alternatives to both Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres and Galatasaray loanee Victor Osimhen.

GiveMeSport understands that Ruben Amorim is a huge admirer of 20-year-old wonderkid Omorodion, who was heavily linked with a move to various top Premier League clubs throughout last summer.

The Spanish international has been described by The Athletic as a "modern No 9" who is "tall, quick, and physically imposing" centre-forward. He is renowned for his hard workrate, aggressive pressing ability, aerial qualities and his immense composure in front of goal. He displayed his class by scoring a sensational double against United in a 3-3 draw in the Europa League back in October when Erik ten Hag was still in the dugout.

Overall, Omorodion has scored 18 times in 29 appearances across all competitions for Porto, making him one of the most in-form strikers in European football this term. He has thrived in Portugal in his debut season following a steady loan spell at Deportivio Alaves in La Liga last term. The former Atletico Madrid marksman signed a five year contract at Estádio do Dragão over the summer, but very nearly ended up at Chelsea.

Failed Chelsea move and reported asking price

In July 2024, The Athletic reported that Chelsea had agreed a £34.5m deal with Atletico to sign Omorodion in an effort to provide further competition to Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku. However, Sky Sports explained that the deal ultimately broke down due to contractual issues with the Blues instead making a move to Joao Felix, who has since been loaned out to AC Milan.

After signing for FC Porto, the Athletic reported Omorodion had a 100 million euro release clause inserted into his contract which equates to around £83m if United were aiming to trigger the clause.

Elsewhere, United and Manchester City are also scouring the market to find a creative attacking midfielder and have set their sights on a young Belgian international labelled as the heir to Kevin de Bruyne.
