The return of Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes to the Manchester United team means Ralf Rangnick has more midfield options for Tuesday’s Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid.
Last weekend, in the absence of the duo, United’s interim manager had no real option other than to start with Fred, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba as the Red Devils beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-2.
But Rangnick now has the dilemma of whether to start with Fernandes and Pogba in the centre against Atletico, as he did in the first leg of the last-16 tie, which the clubs drew 1-1.
For all their attacking abilities, Fernandes and Pogba lack defensive discipline, something United will need for such a high-stakes encounter.
Rangnick also has the option of selecting Pogba in the wide positions, as he did in the recent draw with Watford, but that would result in a winger losing his place, and United have attacked well in those areas over recent games.
Meanwhile, there’s another crucial decision to be made at right-back. Diogo Dalot has looked much more impressive since Rangnick’s appointment, but Aaron Wan-Bissaka had played four in a row prior to Saturday, and is defensively more resolute than his Portuguese colleague.
