Man Utd player ratings gallery - Three score 8/10 and three get 7/10 in 2-2 draw against Barcelona

Marcus Rashford couldn’t inspire Manchester United to victory despite his best efforts at the Nou Camp.

Manchester United came away from the Nou Camp with a 2-2 draw in the first leg of their Europa League qualifier against Barcelona.

A superb second half saw both sides score two, with Marcus Rashford netting for United before Jules Kounde scored an own-goal. It means the tie is perfectly poised before next week’s second leg at Old Trafford.

United pressed Barcelona high in the early periods and were the more assertive side, although it was the hosts who looked more likely to score in the first 20 minutes. Robert Lewandowski forced David de Gea into saves during the opening stages, while Pedri flashed an effort over.

But Erik ten Hag’s side managed to carve out some excellent chances with Jadon Sancho’s shot blocked by Frenkie de Jong, before Marc-Andre ter Stegen made good stops to keep out Wout Weghorst’s left-foot strike, Casemiro’s header and a curled attempt from Rashford.

But the last chance of a tight first half saw Jordi Alba’s shot blocked by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, with mooted suggestions of a penalty turned down.

And it was Barcelona who came out quickest after the break, with Raphina firing wide before Marcos Alonso headed in from a corner to hand the home side the lead. Yet the advantage was short lived and Rashford equalised two minutes later. The attacker latched onto a through ball from Fred and managed to squeeze a shot beyond Ter Stegen at his near post.

After a relatively quiet first half, Rashford was now a potent threat, and it was his dribble and cross that resulted in the Red Devils going 2-1 ahead just before the hour mark. Fernandes applied a flick to Rashford’s ball into the box, with the last touch coming off Kounde and ending up in the Barcelona goal.

United had good chances via an Aaron Wan-Bissaka shot which was deflected wide and a Fred effort which also failed to hit the target, while Raphina’s pile driver was held and Lewandowski curled over from a free-kick.

It was the Polish striker who created Barcelona’s second goal on 77 minutes when his run was picked out by Raphina at the front post, only for the ball to curl straight into the goal without touhing anyone, and was awarded to the former Leeds United man.

The action didn’t let up as the game entered its final stages - Rashford blazed a shot over from a wide area, Raphina’s header drew a save from De Gea, before Ansu Fati’s effort from distance failed to hit the target.

The side top of La Liga pushed to get a winner late on, with Fati’s powerful shot kept out by De Gea, moments after Casemiro nearly scored an own-goal when he inadvertently hit the post of the United goal with a scruffy clearance. In injury-time, Fati saw a good effort flash wide, while Ronald Araujo’s header was deflected out for a corner off Tyrell Malacia, with Xavi’s men ending the stronger.
