Man Utd player ratings gallery - four score 8/10 as one gets 4/10 in 3-1 win over West Ham

Goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Fred, plus a Nayef Aguerd own-goal ensured Manchester United progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.

Manchester United progressed to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Wednesday night in a superb game at Old Trafford, as the Red Devils came from behind to beat West Ham 3-1.

With 15 minutes remaining, it looked set to be a Hammers’ win, but an own-goal from Nayef Aguerd got United going, before Alejandro Garnacho and Fred netted late on to ensure Erik ten Hag’s side will be in the hat for the last eight.

It was a fast start at Old Trafford and Marcel Sabitzer was denied his first United goal after six minutes when Alphonse Areola reacted quickly to keep out the Austrian’s powerful effort from the edge of the box, before Antony curled over soon after. From the opposite wing Garnacho also cut inside and drilled a strike towards goal which was saved by Areola.

But West Ham grew into the game after the halfway point in the first half and David de Gea did excellently to deny Michail Antonio as the striker raced in on goal and shot, while Tomas Soucek’s header from the subsequent corner went wide. Lucas Paqueta also had a shot from the edge of the area which was held by De Gea, as was Said Benrahma’s attempt from a narrow angle.

An underwhelming half ended for United with Scott McTominay’s scruffy shot headed wide, before Garnacho shot over. Within the first five minutes after the break, the hosts also created good openings via Antony and Wout Weghorst, although neither effort seriously tested Areola.

But it was West Ham who took the lead on 55 minutes via Benrahma, who fired into the top corner from inside the box seconds after the ball was close to running out of play on the far touchline, although replays showed Soucek had clearly kept it in play. West Ham could have made it 2-0 on two separate occasions, when Pablo Fornals blazed an effort wide, while Antonio had a great shot that was saved after he skipped past Lisandro Martinez.

United did take the ascendancy as the half continued and Casemiro’s shot was held before Bruno Fernandes volley flew over. The same two combined on 72 minutes when the latter crossed in for Casemiro to head home, although replays showed he was offside in the build-up and the goal was ruled out.

But when the goal came it was via an inswinging Fernandes cross, with Aguerd accidentally heading into his own goal from a corner. United were well on top at this stage, with Fernandes’ shot whizzing off target, Casemiro’s header held and Lisandro Martinez’s overhead kick blocked.

And just as the game looked set to be settled with an extra 30 minutes, Garnacho popped up with a sublime goal as he curled a shot into the far corner. Marcus Rashford’s strike went inches wide in injury-time, before Fred pounced on some sloppy West Ham defending to fire in a third with virtually the last kick of the game.
