Man Utd rapidly accelerate move to seal £25m transfer with 'bid now imminent'
Manchester United are desperate to sign a wing-back in the final weeks of the January window
Manchester United are believed to be lining up a second transfer offer for highly-rated Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu this week.
The Red Devils have already had one offer rejected by the Serie A club this month, but are now planning to return to the table with a higher bid than their initial £22m which was rejected earlier in the transfer window.
Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano shared the news on X: “Manchester United’s new bid for Patrick Dorgu now imminent, it will be over €30m after initial one rejected. Lecce and Man United are negotiating as Dorgu remains the top target at LWB.”
Man Utd aim to sign a left-back
Manchester United’s appointment of Ruben Amorim in December sparked a drastic change to a new footballing philosophy, a strong intent on playing his preferred 3-4-3 formation with an emphasis on well-rounded wing-backs that can contribute at both areas of the pitch.
However, so far Amorim has struggled to make an impact on Manchester United’s fortunes. Last weekend’s 3-1 loss to Brighton marked his seventh defeat in the dugout and sparked a heated post match rant. Amorim said: “In 10 games in the Premier League, we have won two. Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. So we are getting a new coach that is losing more than the last coach.
“I have full knowledge of that. Like I said, I’m not going to change, no matter what. I know we can succeed, but we need to survive this moment. Because I’m not naive and I know that we need to survive now.”
He continued: “We are being the worst team in the history of Manchester United. I know that you want headlines, but I’m saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go, your headlines.”
Amorim is yet to find momentum as Manchester United manager but remains keen to persist with his preferred formation. As such, signing a solid left-wing back is his priority with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia both struggling to overcome their injury woes. Dorgu at this time is thought to be the priority target for the Red Devils, although other names such as Crystal Palace’s Tyrell Malacia, Paris Saint-Germain’s Nuno Mendes and Wolves ace Rayan Ait-Nouri have also been earmarked as players that could improve the team.
Patrick Dorgu asking price
The Red Devils are edging closer to the acquisition of four-time Danish international Patrick Dorgu. The 20-year-old is blessed with tremendous pace, energy, defensive awareness and a keen eye for goal.
Manchester United’s latest bid is understood to be in the region of €30m, which equates to around £25m but the Daily Star understands that Leece are seeking upwards of £33m to part ways with one of their top talents. Leece sit 17th in the Serie A table and are only one point clear of the relegation zone after 21 games. They are determined to keep Dorgu to boost their chances of survival but will agree to sell him if their demands are reached.
Meanwhile, Amorim’s side are on course for their worst finish in the Premier League era and are desperate for an improvement as they seek to progress to the latter stage of the FA Cup and Europa League while also building momentum in the league after a dreadful first half of the season.
