Mason Mount made a big impact off the bench on Thursday night as he produced a magnificent goal to get United level before sealing the fixture - and the semi-final tie - with a long-range finish after Athletic Club goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala was caught in no man’s land trying to clear the ball in stoppage time.

Robbie Savage hails Mason Mount performance

After his two goals at Old Trafford, former Premier League midfielder Robbie Savage made the bold claim that Mount had not had a better 30 minutes in his career so far. He said on commentary for TNT Sport: "I think it has been the best 30 minutes of his career. What a performance from Mason Mount."

It is certainly among the best 30 minutes he has had since joining United for £55m from Chelsea in the summer of 2023. His first goal saw him produce a fine turn to work the space for the shot and curl into the far corner.

Mount has faced numerous injury problems since arriving at Old Trafford but was able to show supporters a glimpse of what he can offer when given a run in the team. He also earned praise from manager Ruben Amorim after the game. The United boss said: "He is perfect for that position because he can be a midfielder, he can run like a winger, he can play with his back to the goal."

Mason Mount reflects on memorable night

Mount told TNT Sports after the game it was definitely his best cameo in a United shirt. Asked was the display his best for United, he said: "For sure. Its' been difficult with the injuries, but I have kept going and it has paid off.

"We knew it was going to be difficult at the beginning of the game. Getting that goal to make it 1-1 calmed us down. It's been too long [since scoring regularly]. I just tried to come on and affect the game."

He added: "The crowd has been unbelievable. For me personally, my first goals at Old Trafford. Special night, one I have been waiting a long time for. We want to go to Bilbao and finish strong now."
