Ruben Amorim confirms key Manchester United player could be back vs Man City but one star a fresh doubt
The Man Utd team news to face Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
Kobbie Mainoo could return to the Manchester United squad when they face Man City in the Premier League this weekend, but there is a fresh injury concern ahead of the match. United are back in action when they host City at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon and will hope for a better result than they managed against Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night.
Ruben Amorim welcomed five players back for the 1-0 defeat at the City Ground, as Patrick Dorgu returned from a three-match domestic suspension and four stars returned after injury. There could be a couple of changes to the United line up when they face City, with Mainoo in contention to be named on the bench this weekend.
Mainoo suffered an unspecified injury ahead of United's 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in February and his potential return will be a huge boost to Amorim ahead of a pivotal few weeks in their season.
Manchester United team news vs Man City
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Ruben Amorim issued an update on his squad for the Manchester derby clash against Man City. Kobbie Mainoo could be back on the bench on Sunday afternoon, but Matthijs de Ligt is a doubt after he suffered a knock in the midweek defeat to Nottingham Forest.
“I think Kobbie is returning to training, we will see, assess or this game, he cannot play a full game,” Amorim told reporters at his pre-match press conference. “I think Matthijs has an issue, he has something in the game and we have to assess.”
Mason Mount returned from injury when he made a cameo from the bench in the midweek defeat to Nottingham Forest, and Amorim confirmed he is in contention to start against City on Sunday afternoon. “Yeah he can start but we have to manage his minutes still. For the team it is not to speak about that too much, let Mason Mount train a lot of times, getting the load in his body and forget about that because the mind sometimes is more important than the body.”
United face Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final next week but Amorim does not plan to rest players for the clash this weekend, though he has suggested he could rotate the team when they travel to face Newcastle between the two legged tie. He added: “We are going to focus game by game, we have a few to recover from the last game and then a focus on that department will be the next one in the PL and we want to win this game, we want to improve in the league table and especially we want to win games.”
