Man Utd & Man City stars scoop four prizes at 2023 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards

Mary Earps was the big winner in the 2023 awards on Tuesday night.

Manchester United and Manchester City stars scooped four of the biggest prizes in Tuesday night’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

Mary Earps earned the main accolade in the 2023 edition, winning the coveted Sports Personality of the Year accolade. The goalkeeper, who played every minute of England’s run to the Women’s World Cup final earlier this year held off competition from Stuart Broad and  Katarina Johnson-Thompson to win the trophy.

United goalkeeper Earps is the second successive winner from the Lionesses after Beth Mead claimed the award in 2022. The 30-year-old kept a record 14 clean sheets for the Red Devils in 2022/23 WSL and was also voted England Women's Player of the Year, as well as the Fifa Best Women's Goalkeeper.

“I’m very honoured and humbled, as this is the ultimate all round sporting accolade. We’ve had an incredible couple of years but this is just wow,” Earps said on stage. "It’s not been the easiest journey and I wouldn't be here without my loved ones in my corner, who have been with me through the really not so great times.

"The last two years have been unbelievable, I’ve done more than I could have ever imagined. Thank you to my goalkeeping coaches, my team-mates and my coaches."

Elsewhere, Pep Guardiola’s treble winners earned the Team of the Year award, with the Catalan voted Coach of the Year. “What we have done in 2023 is something none of us will ever forget and this award is another special way to recognise what we achieved,” said club captain Kyle Walker.

“We are so proud of everything we have achieved together. I want to thank everyone connected to Manchester City, too, because without them none of what we have achieved would have been possible.

Erling Haaland was also named World Sport Star of the Year to wrap up four Manchester winners on the night. “I am especially grateful to have been voted ahead of an incredible group of athletes who are all legends in their individual sports,” said the Norwegian.

“I would like to thank all my teammates, as well as Pep Guardiola and the City coaching staff as without all of them I wouldn’t have been able to score the number of goals I have.”
