Manchester United produced a sensational comeback to snub Lyon of a place in the Europa League semi-finals.

Manchester United played out an emotional rollercoaster of a performance in their latest Europa League clash. After looking down and out in extra time of their second leg quarter-final clash with Lyon, the Red Devils rose from the ashes and punched their ticket to the semis.

It was a performance of true grit and determination from Ruben Amorim’s side. With 13 goals scored across the two legs, United kept their season alive with an exhilarating six-minute period and jaw-dropping last gasp scenes in extra time.

After a Bruno Fernandes penalty and a Kobbie Mainoo strike to claw back a 4-2 deficit, Harry Maguire headed home the winner in injury time to blow the roof off Old Trafford and send United into the semi-finals.

The centre-back discussed the sensational comeback from his side but addressed how the rest of the season has been far from what fans expect from a United side.

Harry Maguire names Man United best player in Lyon thriller

Speaking after the match, Maguire highlighted a weak area in Amorim’s team that the world has latched onto, but made sure to name the man who has been his standout player across the two legs against Lyon.

“You guys can see that we're probably short on attackers,” Maguire said. “Tonight, if we've got two attackers in the squad in Garners [Alejandro Garnacho] and Rasmus [Hojlund] and they give everything out there. I think Garners was on his last legs and he was up and down the pitch numerous times.

“So I think we are short on attackers, we lost Josh [Zirkzee], so if he asks me to go up there, I'm willing to go up there. I do see myself as a threat and I do feel like I can score a goal up there.

“Speaking of Leny [Yoro], as well, I think he was brilliant again. I think over the two ties, I'd say he's been our best player, so congratulations to Leny.”

Harry Maguire gives honest verdict on Man United season

United’s only hope of a trophy this season rests on their Europa League performances. Amorim’s side are desperate to go the whole hog to make up for their lacklustre run in the Premier League.

Ahead of their clash with Wolves, the Red Devils sit 14th in the table. If they do not pick up a win on Sunday, they are at risk of slipping further down the table, but a win could take them into 13th. This is far from the ideal situation for a club like United, though, and Maguire has acknowledged the disappointing performances, as well as how late they left it in the Europa League to turn things around.

“We can't be doing that and be leaving it to turn it around in that situation. But it does show great spirit, fight, togetherness, and that's the one thing this group of lads is doing, they're giving everything,” the England international said.

“Sometimes I think this year it's not been good enough and rightly so, it hasn't, but they are giving everything.”
