Former Manchester United star Jaap Stam has cast doubt on one of the club’s reported January transfer targets.
The Red Devils are likely to add to their squad in the January window, with Erik ten Hag needing a little more help if he is to guide the club back to the top four. United are currently looking up at the Champions League spots, and they will be desperate to return to UEFA’s premier competition sooner rather than later.
January could be key to United’s season, though they have already spent a big chunk this season, so they will have to spend wisely this winter. One option is PSV star Cody Gakpo, who has been heavily linked following talks with the club during the summer window.
Gakpo has been excellent for PSV and the Netherlands, and ten Hag has already shown a willingness to sign Dutch talent, keen to work with players from his own nation. Amid standout form at the World Cup, many are enamoured with Gakpo, but former United star and Dutchman Stam is not fully convinced the winger will fix ten Hag’s issues.
“Everyone is talking about Cody Gakpo, people are going to assume that Man United are going to go for him but I don’t know if that’s the situation,” Stam told Football Betting. “Gakpo would be a player that would fit into the Man United squad. There would be questions over whether he can deliver straight away because he’s from Holland and we have seen people struggle in the past.
“The question is then, do Man United need to go for a more experienced winger that has maybe played at a certain level so that they can have an impact straight away.”
Gakpo has managed 18 goals and 18 assists across club and international football this season, and it is rumoured he will cost around £35million this winter.
