Alessia Russo’s strike in first half injury time was enough to win the game for Manchester United as they moved four points clear of second placed Chelsea in the WSL.

It was United’s first double over the Gunners since their promotion to the women’s top tier and provided further evidence of a significant midshift shift from Marc Skinner’s side this season that has fans and players believing the title could finally be heading to the red side of Manchester.

And with just four league games to go, goal-scorer Russo opened up on the confidence that is emanating through the dressing room at Leigh Sports Village.

"There's always a buzz in our changing room. We have such a good group of girls and the team dynamic is really special and that shows on nights like this - we all know that have each others backs” said the Lionesses star.

“I'm buzzing. I think these are the games that mean so much. Arsenal are a top side and these games are so important to us. Now until the end of the season every three points counts - and this was a big one this evening.

“We just wanted to go out there and be positive and show what we can do. Before, we've maybe not backed ourselves against the top teams and this season we've grown so much and we go into these games knowing how good we are.

“Tonight we were just really proud. We've had a heavy week coming off internationals and going into the FA Cup and then this game tonight. Credit to all the players and staff, we were all fit and healthy and now we rest and recover for Aston Villa next week.”

The 24-year-old was also full of praise for winger Nikita Parris who returned the squad that night and played a pivotal role in the winning goal against her former side.

“When Keets (Nikita Parris) gets on a one versus one, I just want to get in the box and and it was a great pick out from her. I like to think we have a good relationship with all of our wingers because they're all so different. Lucia (Garcia) is powerful and quick, Leah (Galton) likes to whip a powerful cross in and Keets is clever.”

Skinner’s side will now enjoy a well earned weekend break before they return to WSL action with a tough away game at Aston Villa next Friday which will be live on BBC Three.
