Manchester United have extended Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s contract by 12 months, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The defender’s deal was set to expire in the summer meaning Wan-Bissaka was free to negotiate with foreign clubs from 1 January. But United have reportedly ensured Wan-Bissaka won’t walk away for nothing at the end of the season by opting to trigger the year extension inserted into most players’ contracts.

“Wan-Bissaka remains on the £90,000-a-week wages agreed when joining United from Crystal Palace five years ago, but the club have indicated they are willing to offer him a new deal on higher terms,” claim the Mail.

Wan-Bissaka is in the same situation as Victor Lindelof, who has reportedly seen his current deal extended by 12 months. United deployed a similar approach with Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford last season, all of whom went on to sign long-term deals at a later date

However, it is not believed United have utilised the 12-month option with Raphael Varane, who turns 31 in April. The ex-Real Madrid man has struggled to remain fit this season and has dropped out of the side on various occasions, although he has played in both of United’s last two games.

As for Wan-Bissaka, he has made 15 appearances this term and has vied with Dalot for a starting berth at right-back. Erik ten Hag has been on the lookout for additions in that area since his arrival at Old Trafford, but a lack of financial resources and the need to prioritise other positions have seen the United boss stick with Wan-Bissaka and Dalot.
