Man Utd double transfer blow as £15.2m target makes decision and Premier League rivals 'return for talks'

Man Utd were one of several Premier League teams interested alongside Newcastle and West Ham.

Manchester United have been dealt a double transfer blow after seeing their chances of signing two reported targets disappear. United are expecting a quiet month but have been linked with a number of players and remain on their toes for a potential opportunity. Erik ten Hag is keen to strengthen in central midfield and upfront so reports of interest in Andre and Serhou Guirassy came as no surprise.

Guirassy was on the radar of several Premier League clubs including Newcastle United and West Ham, following an excellent run of 17 goals in 14 Bundesliga appearances - second only in the league to Harry Kane. The Stuttgart man was said to have a release clause of just £15.2million in his contract but it was only valid for the first two weeks of January and has now expired.

Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has echoed reports that the release clause is no longer valid and added that Guirassy is keen to stay with Stuttgart regardless. The German club have been informed of his decision and barring any late surprises, will keep their talisman until at least the summer.

United's interest in Fluminense midfielder Andre was less advanced, but any hope of a return may be ended with Fulham reigniting talks over a move this month. Ten Hag's side were linked with the 22-year-old over the summer but it has been radio silence on the matter since Sir Jim Ratcliffe's investment was confirmed on Christmas Eve.

Fulham pulled out of discussions earlier this month and decided to focus their efforts elsewhere, but now FootballTransfers reports that Marco Silva's side have returned to the table. Discussions between both clubs and the player are said to have progressed well and a January move could now go ahead.

How serious United's interest was in both remains to be seen but the chance of either arriving at Old Trafford this month is slim. Attacking reinforcements are top of the summer shopping list for Ten Hag and so they could return for Guirassy, but the chance to sign him on the cheap is gone and any summer move will cost a significant amount more.
