Man Utd ‘could target’ £35m midfielder who would ‘fit perfectly in the Premier League’

Manchester United are preparing for the January transfer window.

Manchester United have not had the most ideal start to the Premier League season, despite enjoying a fruitful summer transfer window. The Reds’ latest loss was a hefty defeat in the Manchester Derby, as Manchester City ran out 3-0 winners at Old Trafford to hand their rivals their fifth loss of the season.

January is fast approaching and United have been linked to a number of potential new recruits, while some players could also be put on the chopping block and be shipped off to a new club.

One player whose name has resurfaced is Denzel Dumfries, who has been heavily linked to a move to the Premier League. According to Calciomercato, the Netherlands international has attracted the attention Chelsea and Mauricio Pochettino, who have been ‘on his trail for some time.’ But the report also states that attention should be paid to United and Liverpool, who have joined the conversation in the potential signing of Dumfries.

The report states that Dumfries’ ‘athleticism and physicality’ makes him a player who can ‘fit perfectly into the Premier League environment’, which makes him a very obvious target for clubs in England looking to bolster their ranks. United also have the benefit of Erik ten Hag knowing Dumfries ‘very well’, which could play a part in swaying his decision, should he opt to leave Inter Milan.

Dumfries has been with Inter since 2021 and his current contract is due to expire in 2025. The versatile midfielder, who can also play at right-back, is said to be valued at €40 million (£35m), but a contract renewal from the Nerazurri could see this figure rise.

In the absence of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, United have been utilising Diogo Dalot, but the Portugal international is now the only fit right-back on ten Hag’s roster right now. Like their Premier League rivals including Liverpool and Chelsea, they have been limited with options in this position, which is why all three have been linked with potentially moving for Dumfries in January.
