Manchester United are being tipped to sign another goalkeeper just months after spending big to land Andre Onana from Inter Milan. Erik ten Hag's men have endured a difficult start to the season so far, continuing their struggles with a 3-0 home defeat to rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

They are now preparing for a Carabao Cup clash with Newcastle United a Premier League date with Fulham, hoping to put things right sooner rather than later. In the meantime, the never-ending transfer talk continues, and United are being linked with a surprise move as they prepare to lose their goalkeeper for a number of games.

Onana recently returned to the Cameroon setup after making up with his head coach, and he will head off to the African Cup of Nations in early January, potentially missing a month and up to seven games, depending on how far Cameroon get in Cote d'Ivoire and Guinea-Bissa.

United signed Altay Bayindir to be number two during the summer, while Tom Heaton is also an option for the Red Devils, but reports in Portugal continue to suggest Erik ten Hag is interested in Porto and Portugal keeper Diogo Costa.

A Bola are reporting that Costa has 'returned' to United's radar, ahead of the January transfer window, but it would be a surprise if they made a move. The Red Devils spent as much as £50million on a goalkeeper in the summer, and they fell short of strengthening in key areas, still needing more depth defensively, in particular. Costa is likely to cost a reported £64.2million, and it would be astounding if United made such an investment on another goalkeeper at this stage, even with Onana gone for a few weeks in the winter, and even with his less than ideal start to life at Old Trafford.
